Why You’ll Love It

Microclover is a low-maintenance alternative lawn seed that improves soil health, reduces fertilizer use, and blends seamlessly with grass. Compared to traditional turf grass, microclover requires less water, less fertilizer, and fewer chemical inputs.

As a low-growing, nitrogen-fixing legume, microclover naturally feeds surrounding grasses, creating a denser, healthier lawn without synthetic fertilizers. Its small leaf size blends beautifully into turf, adding durability, drought resilience, and a rich green color that lasts from spring through fall.

Microclover can be used on its own as an alternative lawn or added to existing grass seed mixes to improve soil health, fill thin areas, and support pollinators — all while saving time, water, and money.

Planting Overview

  • Plant Type: Low-growing perennial legume
  • Leaf Size: Very small
  • Sun Exposure: Full sun to full shade
  • Water Needs: Moderate during establishment; low once established
  • Maintenance: Very low

Growing Zone

Microclover is a hardy, widely adaptable species that grows successfully across most of the United States. Its tolerance for different soils, climates, and light conditions makes it a reliable choice in many regions.

Ideal Climate Regions:
1 · 2 · 3 · 4 · 5 · 7
(Region 6 with irrigation)

Composition

This product contains 100% microclover seed (Trifolium repens var. microclover), selected for small leaf size, uniform growth, and lawn compatibility.

Microclover performs exceptionally well when:

  • Used alone for a soft, flowering alternative lawn
  • Added to grass seed mixes at ~5% by weight
  • Paired with fine fescues, EcoSeed, or Ultimate Clover

Planting Instructions

Bare soil vs. overseeding matters — but both are possible.

Microclover can be planted into prepared bare soil or overseeded into existing lawns. The best approach depends on your starting conditions and desired results.

Bare Soil Planting

  • Ideal for new lawns or full lawn replacements
  • Remove existing vegetation and loosen the top 1–2 inches of soil
  • Broadcast seed evenly and lightly press into the soil surface

Overseeding

  • Excellent for thickening thin lawns and filling bare spots
  • Mow existing grass low before seeding
  • Lightly rake to ensure good seed-to-soil contact

Timing & Establishment

  • Spring or early fall planting is ideal
  • Keep soil evenly moist during establishment
  • Reduce watering once plants are established

What to Expect

  • Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days
  • Lawn color deepens as nitrogen becomes available to companion plants
  • Flowering remains subtle and low-growing

Product is great but the shipping times are insanely slow. For such a small package there is no way it shouldbtakes weeks just to ship the product.

Still a little early to evaluate coverage, but the microclover has sprouted really well and as it fills in, it appears as if this will accomplish exactly what I had hoped for. I'm very happy.

Healthy germination and quickly fills in patches in the lawn with thick green color. Looking forward to progressively overseeing each fall / spring and hopefully replacing the grass. Zone 6b; part shade / part sun lawn; poor drainage.

The weather has not been cooperating so we are off to a slow start. The clover is starting to come in now. We have a half acre yard and we have planted white dutch clover, micro-clover, and the low grow no mow grass and clover mix. We are trying to get red creeping thyme to grow in our driveway that has permeable pavers. We are going for a pollinator yard with native trees, shrubs, and clover. Thank you.

Seeds arrived in good shape and I planted after preparation of the soil (very sandy in Florida). Germination was very good and I was thinking I would have a clover lawn in no time. However, the seedlings did not survive in areas where there was sun. Florida (Tampa) can be hot, dry, and sunny in April, so I watered and watered. I am not sure if I watered too much after the seeds sprouted or if the hot sun burned them. I still have some seedlings in shade. I am thinking I will try to replant in the fall and we will see what happens. Wish me luck!

So far so good! The leaves are now on the trees shading a lot of our back yard. It will be interesting to see how well it does without as much sun. Fingers crossed!

Superb. They sprouted very easy and look cool so far in my pot. Outside once the cold gave way to some warmer weather, I seen the little sprouts showing their heads.

I like how it’s taken to the open soil around steps I had installed. I also received advice from your customer service on protecting this young clover through freezes. Can’t wait to plant my wildflowers next spring.

Microclover is perfect for my lawn which is not irrigated. I wanted a low growth alternative to grass and this mixes well with both the existing Dutch white clover and perennial rye grass.
