What To Expect
Creeping Thyme establishes slowly compared to traditional grass seed, especially in existing lawns that have been heavily fertilized or contain thick turf competition. During the first season, plants remain small while root systems develop underground. By the second growing season, your landscape will begin filling in with fragrant foliage and beautiful low-growing blooms that create a living carpet of color.
Regular watering during germination and dry periods is essential for success. Once established, Creeping Thyme becomes highly drought tolerant and requires minimal upkeep.
Seeding Information
When To Seed:
Best planted in spring, late summer, or early fall when temperatures are moderate and rainfall is more frequent. Avoid seeding immediately before frost. Dormant seeding on frozen ground is also possible.
Site Preparation:
Mow existing grass down to approximately 0.5โ1โ. Remove clippings and rake away excess thatch so the soil surface is exposed and loosened before seeding. Good seed-to-soil contact is critical for germination.
Watering:
Lightly water immediately after seeding. Keep soil consistently moist for the first 1โ2 weeks and continue watering as needed if seedlings begin to dry out.
Mowing:
Maintain surrounding grass at approximately 3โ during the first year to reduce competition and allow young thyme seedlings to establish.
Fertilizer:
For poor soils, a low-nitrogen organic fertilizer such as an 8-0-4 blend may be applied 2โ3 months after seeding.
Weed Control:
Remove excessive weeds by hand or through natural methods before planting. Avoid broadcast weed killers after seeding, as herbicides may damage or kill Creeping Thyme plants.
