Native Pink Blooms for Moist, Naturalized Areas
Creeping Smartweed™ (Persicaria pensylvanica), also known as Pennsylvania Smartweed, is a native North American annual valued for its delicate pink blooms and wildlife benefits. It thrives in sunny, moist areas where many traditional lawn grasses may struggle, making it a natural choice for rain gardens, drainage areas, pond edges, naturalized spaces, and other low-use areas of the landscape.
Unlike a traditional turfgrass or low-growing perennial lawn alternative, Creeping Smartweed is an annual plant that grows from seed each year. Its stems may grow upright or somewhat spreading, and mature plants can reach several feet tall depending on growing conditions. For this reason, it should be thought of as a native flowering groundcover or naturalized planting, rather than a conventional lawn replacement.
Features
Native North American Plant – A native species found across much of the United States
Pink Summer Blooms – Produces clusters of small pink flowers that add seasonal color
Wildlife Value – Seeds provide food for songbirds and waterfowl
Moisture-Loving – Performs best in moist soils and naturally occurring wet areas
Sun-Loving – Grows best in full sun
Naturally Reseeding – Reproduces from seed, allowing it to return in suitable conditions
Naturalized Landscape Option – A useful choice for areas where a traditional manicured lawn isn't the goal
Why You'll Love Creeping Smartweed
Creeping Smartweed brings a different kind of beauty to the landscape. Rather than trying to mimic traditional turf, it creates a more naturalized planting with green foliage and small rosy-pink flower clusters.
Persicaria pensylvanica is an annual species that grows from seed each year. Plants can vary considerably in height depending on soil moisture, light, and growing conditions, so it is important to allow room for its natural growth habit. It is not intended to remain at a turf-like 4–6 inch height and is not recommended for areas intended for regular foot traffic, play, or lounging.
This native species is particularly well suited to sunny, moist locations. It naturally occurs in places such as moist fields, disturbed areas, ditches, riverbanks, pond edges, and other areas where moisture is available.
Its small pink flowers provide seasonal interest, while the seeds are valuable to wildlife. Smartweed seeds are eaten by songbirds and waterfowl, making this an attractive addition to a wildlife-friendly landscape.
Creeping Smartweed is best used where you want a more natural landscape rather than a highly manicured lawn. Allow it to grow naturally, enjoy its seasonal flowers, and let its seeds contribute to the surrounding ecosystem.
Where It Grows Best
- Rain gardens and drainage areas
- Pond and water-feature edges
- Moist meadows and naturalized areas
- Low-use sections of the landscape
- Native habitat plantings
- Moist borders and transitional areas
- Areas where traditional turf is difficult to establish
Important Growth Information
Creeping Smartweed™ (Persicaria pensylvanica) is an annual, not a perennial lawn grass. Plants can grow substantially taller than traditional turf and may reach several feet in favorable conditions.
Do not purchase this seed expecting a permanent 4–6 inch lawn substitute. Its natural growth habit is better suited to naturalized areas, wildlife plantings, and moist landscape spaces where a taller seasonal plant is appropriate.
Planting Instructions
-
Choose the Right Location
Select a sunny location with moist soil. Pennsylvania Smartweed performs best in moist conditions and is commonly found in fields, drainage areas, riverbanks, pond edges, and other wet or seasonally wet habitats. -
Prepare the Soil
Remove existing weeds and vegetation and lightly loosen the soil surface. Avoid burying the seed deeply. -
Sow the Seed
Broadcast seed evenly across the prepared soil. Lightly press the seed into the soil surface so it has good seed-to-soil contact. -
Keep Moist During Establishment
Maintain consistent moisture while seeds are germinating and seedlings are becoming established. Because this species naturally favors moist soils, do not allow the planting area to dry excessively during establishment. -
Allow Natural Growth
Once established, allow plants to develop naturally. Remember that Pennsylvania Smartweed is an annual and may grow several feet tall. It will produce flowers and seed during the growing season, with new plants potentially appearing from seed in subsequent seasons.
